Police are hunting a ute driver who allegedly smashed into on coming traffic during a high speed chase across Auckland.

The pursuit began about 7.30am on Saturday when police were called to an alleged burglary in Glenfield on the North Shore.

As a police car approached a ute, which they suspected was being used to carry stolen goods, the ute rammed it three times before speeding off.

Police chased the ute 20km south to Henderson where police had laid spikes.

Swerving to avoid the spikes, the ute drove into oncoming traffic, smashing into a car, police say.

No one was injured and police called off the chase.

They are appealing for sightings of a Toyota Hilux or Mitsubishi L200 which has a fibreglass canopy, large black rimmed mags, signwriting on the side and an orange flashing light on the roof which may belong to a contractor.

The driver is described as caucasian, in his 30s or 40s.
