Destiny Church co-founder Hannah Tamaki has been stood down from the Maori Women's Welfare League a year after she made a controversial run for president of the league.

The wife of Bishop Brian Tamaki was accused of trying to take over the women's group when it gained hundreds of church-linked members and she tried to become president.

Mrs Tamaki has been stood down from the league until 2015 and three branches linked to the church won't be recognised by the league, TVNZ reported.

Church spokesman Richard Lewis said Mrs Tamaki had not had a chance to consider her response to the move.

She would reflect during the weekend.

Mrs Tamaki told TVNZ's Q+A programme last year that she wanted to lift the league's profile.

The church has revealed plans for a "City of God" in South Auckland. It has been seen as a potential political force.
