Work to build a new wicket block at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch will begin on Monday, with bigger proposed developments at the grounds in doubt after opposition from the public and city councillors.

The cricket ground in Hagley Park requires repairs and upgrades to its irrigation and drainage, while its outfield will also get an upgrade as part of the development.

Christchurch City Council's general manager of community services Michael Aitken says that work will start on Monday and continue into spring.

However, it is not yet clear whether further upgrades at the site, proposed by Canterbury Cricket, will get the go-ahead, with it facing public opposition.

Christchurch City Councillors last month voted 12-1 against the $20 million proposal which includes floodlights, a raised embankment with more seating and a new pavilion - which would be required if Christchurch were to host games in the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

The council instead voted to go ahead with the $1 million work which starts this week.

The Save Hagley Park group last week threatened an injunction to halt the project, but eventually held off and was assessing its options following the release of the Christchurch CBD blueprint.

The group's spokesman Martin Meehan told The Press it was disappointing the wicket work would proceed when the future of the bigger development was yet to be decided.
