A 13-year-old boy has choked to death on a hot dog during an eating contest to raise money for Haiti.

Police are now investigating after Noah Akers, from the US city of San Pedro, died after taking part in the fundraiser, run by a local children's club.

The Boys & Girls Club of San Pedro had organised a series of activities for January 28 to raise funds for quake-ravaged Haiti, including a contest where children attempted to eat a hot dog covered in whipped cream in order to win a chocolate prize.

The club insists the contest was not to see who could eat the most hot dogs, according to LA-based news network KTLA.

Noah suddenly began choking during the event.

A male staff member performed the Heimlich manoeuvre, but it took an extended pair of forceps wielded by paramedics to remove the hot dog.

Noah was alive when he was taken to a local hospital but doctors say he was without oxygen for too long and they took him off life support four days later.

A police investigation has found that the children were properly supervised and that Noah's death was an accident.
