Gordon Boyd's tantrum has become a viral hit.

A US reporter has achieved unfortunate notoriety after an on-air hissy fit in the middle of a report about a child killer.

The footage of WVLT TV Volunteer News reporter Gordon Boyd abruptly blowing up live on air has gone viral since it was posted on YouTube yesterday.

The report begins with Boyd reporting on the trial of a child killer outside a courthouse in Knoxville, Tennessee, when he starts to lose composure and stumble over his lines.

When Boyd finally botches a sentence, he violently throws his notepad to the ground.

The report then cuts back to the anchor in the studio, who is visibly stunned by Boyd's outburst.

After an awkward pause, the anchor says: "All right, we’re having technical difficulties — we can see a little frustration there."

It is not known what prompted the reporter's reaction.

Boyd is a veteran reporter of more than 20 years who strives to make his coverage "factual and flavourful, clear and complete", his biography on the Volunteer TV News website says.
