A Peruvian surfer is believed to have become the first person to surf with an alpaca.

After spending a decade training dogs to surf with him on his board, Domingo Pianezzi decided to introduce his alpaca Pisco to the sport.

The 44-year-old surfer spent several months introducing the mountain animal to the waters of the Pacific Ocean after coming up with the idea in Australia.

"I've surfed with a dog, a parrot, a hamster and a cat, but when I was at a competition in Australia I saw people surfing with kangaroos and koalas," Pianezzi was quoted by Reuters as saying.

"So I thought that, as a Peruvian, it would be interesting to surf with a unique animal that represents Peru."

The unlikely pair caught three waves together today at a beach south of Lima, with Pisco wearing a lifejacket while crouching on the 3m longboard.

The alpaca plunged into the water at one point and appeared to get a bit of a fright.

Pianezzi said alpacas were not instinctive swimmers but Pisco was getting used to the water.
