The earthquake, which struck at 4.35am, was centred 30km west of Christchurch.

Several buildings in the central city collapsed and power and water were cut in some areas.

Two men were seriously hurt — a man in his 50s is in a serious condition in intensive care at Christchurch Hospital after a chimney collapsed on him and another man was injured by falling glass.

Roads have been badly damaged, with several streets impassable.

There have been reports of looting and police have now closed the cental city because of the amount of rubble.

Civil Defence is urging people to inspect their homes for damage and move everyone outside if the building is unsafe.

Residents may have to be evacuated from seaside suburbs because of the risk of flooding from broken water and sewage pipes.

They are also asking people not to overload phone lines with non-emergency calls and to avoid non-essential travel.

There have been several aftershocks and this is expected to continue.

Christchurch Hospital is open but people should only go there in an emergency. Minor injuries can be treated at the 24 Hour After Hours Surgery in Bealey Ave.

I was in a night club in central Christchurch, I sometimes DJ in my friend was DJing at the time the place was packed. Power went out and the club started to shake was full on and very scary no-body really knew what to do! The staff calmy rounded us up and we went outside, the alley way was bad, lots of old buildings fallen down, bricks all over the ground the pavement all shifted, cars squashed. Im lucky to have gotten outa there!
I'm down in Dunedin and was awake when it struck, Here it was still quite a biggy...the windows rattling, lamps shaking, bed swaying! It certainly gave me a freight. Our home is over 100 years old and would have been devistated if we were in Canterbury. Must have been so scary for those who felt the worse of it. It certainly lets us appreciate the country we live in, how soon the response was and how helpful everyone's been. The rest of the world can learn alot from us!
After stepping out of the elevator from the 5th to 3rd floor,my wife, daughter,a nurse and I were met by a security guard. We proceeded to Neo Natel to see our new grandaughter.I heard the nurse scream followed by my wife as I got thrown into a waiting room.I managed to crawl towards them as they hung onto a handrail, the corridor swaying violently fro side to side.We done our best to protect our daughter who was in a wheelchair facing a corridor which had unused incubators rolling around.Another guard arrived reassuring us.Neo Natel staff came out asking if we were ok.They walked us through,Staff were going about their business. As we were hit by aftershocks I watched how they raced to protect the babies in their charge.Knowing their families could also be in Peril. They cared so much for these babies. Our nurse despite being petrified was so focused on us.I will never forget you,the people that at that moment put all these babies lives unselfishly before theirs and their families.Thankyou
