Major aftershock shakes Canterbury

The most strongly felt and damaging aftershock since Saturday's major earthquake has hit Canterbury this morning.

It has caused fresh damage to buildings and affected power.

The aftershock measured 5.1 on the Richter scale.

At least 10 other tremors were felt overnight.

The state of emergency in Christchurch is likely to remain in place today as authorities warn of more aftershocks to come.

More than 100 aftershocks which have rocked Canterbury since Saturday's destructive 7.1 earthquake. But it's not over yet — Civil Defence has issued a warning that an aftershock of six is possible in the next few days.

A website has been set up to help Canterbury residents access services and keep informed in the aftermath of Saturdays major quake. More to come.

Would just like to let anyone in Chch know we would welcome a family in our home in Auckland for anyone who wants to get themselves and their kids away for a bit to repair their frayed nerves and have a break. Warm beds, safe home and plenty of room for kids. mel_lavea at hotmail dot com

To all our family and friends in Christchurch, our thoughts are with you all as we watch the devastation of the earthquake and its aftermath via internet and BBC news here in India. We know that you are all so very tired and scared and we feel so helpless as we watch from afar. Keep safe among your friends, families and communities and seek comfort in knowing the world is praying that this trauma will soon be over and the path to rebulding can begin. Be strong Kylie and Matthew xoxo
