UK mum forced to choose which child to save

A UK mother was forced to choose which of her children to rescue when her car plunged into a dyke and sank.

Rachel Edwards was driving her son Jack, 16, and daughter Isabella, two, when she hit a pothole, sending the car into the water, the Daily Mail reported.

Mrs Edwards, who was six months pregnant at the time of the crash last month, managed to pull her daughter out of the car and swim to the surface.

After getting Isabella to safety, she tried to rush back to save Jack, who was strapped in the front seat, but was held back by paramedics.

"Since then I have spent every waking moment thinking about how I could have saved both my children," she said.

"I tried to go back for Jack but I knew if I let go of Isabella then I wouldn't be able to get her back."

Two of Jack's friends were in the car at the time of the accident but were able to escape as it sank.

Mrs Edwards recounted that she had told Jack to keep his window closed in case the breeze woke up Isabella, who was asleep.

The closed window may have prevented Jack from making his escape.

Mrs Edwards' new baby is due to be born in November, three days after Jack's birthday.
