A Westminster Abbey official overjoyed by the successful royal wedding ceremony has been filmed by television cameras cartwheeling down the aisle hours after the wedding.

Ben Sheward, a clergy assistant known as a verger, could not contain his joy so decided to perform the acrobatic manoeuvre on the red carpet, where hours earlier billions of people had watched newlyweds William and Kate Middleton walk down as husband and wife.

Dressed in a traditional black cassock, Sheward can be seen jogging in the entrance where a handful of the 1900 guests were milling, before performing the cart wheel and smiling broadly after he landed.

A spokesman for the Abbey said the Verger was expressing his joy at a job well done during the ceremony, Digital Spy reported.

"Our view is that the verger was simply reflecting what we all feel about a very successful service. It is a general reflection of the mood of the Abbey and a job well done," the spokesman said.

"It was long after the congregation had departed and we were all reflecting on what we had achieved," he said.

The role of the verger is to help the clergy prepare for and carry out their services.
