A six-year old boy is being praised as a hero for calling 911 after the car he was travelling in landed on its roof after crashing down a 45-metre embankment.

Aaron Dober was in the car as his mum Nikki drove in upstate New York on Saturday when she veered off the icy road to avoid colliding with an oncoming vehicle.

"It was like a scary movie!" the six-year-old East Berne boy told FOX23 News

Ms Dober said she remembers the car rolling off the road and landing on its roof with her and her son still inside.

"Next thing I know, he's climbing out of the trunk and looking at my window saying, 'I'm going to kick it open.' ... and I said, 'No, if you're out, see if you can find somebody. Try to find anybody,'" Ms Dober said.

Aaron bravely ventured into the woods and came across a man who helped him call 911.

Police have called Aaron a hero.

"Some people will panic in a situation like that," says Acting Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple.

"Some people will be afraid to leave their mother but he left his mother for the right reason: to go get help."

Aaron and his mum were treated at Albany Medical Center Hospital before being released.
