Kiwi soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's niece has added another feather to the family’s entertainment cap – pole-dancing.
One of the founders of the Australian Pole Dance company, Natalie Te Kanawa will bringing together pole dancers from both side of the Tasman for a national championship, according to media reports.
The competition will be held in Melbourne, with heats starting on Thursday and the finals on Saturday.
"This is a competition designed to showcase all the styles of pole from across Australia" she has said in a statement.
The company promotes pole dancing as an alternative to regular exercise, particularly good for training the upper body.
It also encourages men to partake.
"The inclusion of men allows a demonstration of the circus and acrobatic pole that is often overlooked when people talk about pole dance," she said.
Te Kanawa said that today there are more than 120 companies teaching pole dancing in Australia.
She said four years ago there were only six.
