The Japanese man suspected of killing a British teacher whose naked body was discovered bound with tape in a bathtub full of sand has been caught.

It was reported Tatsuya Ichihashi modified his eyelids, nose and lips with plastic surgery to escape capture.

But police arrested him he waited to board a ferry from Osaka to the island of Okinawa, according to media reports.

A man alerted police of his location after recognising him from new photographs circulated last week which depicted him post-surgery.

Lindsay Ann Hawker’s parents, Bill and Julia Hawker, said they were relieved at the arrest.

"We are so relieved it is over, I can go to my daughter's grave this afternoon and tell her," Mr Hawker said.

"It's been a good day for the family but our lives will never be the same."

Detectives believe Lindsay, 22, was held prisoner for 36 hours, bound at the wrists and ankles, and severely beat her before she was strangled.
