Agneta Westlund was probably killed by an elk, police say.

A Swedish man has been cleared of the murder of his wife after forensic investigation revealed the woman was most likely killed by an elk.

Ingemar Westlund, 68, was arrested immediately after reporting the death of his wife last year.

He told police he found her lying dead beside a lake near their home in the village of Loftahammer.

His wife Agneta Westlund, 63, had been out taking her dog for a walk when she died.

But police dropped the case after elk fur and saliva was found on her body, the BBC reported.

Elks, a type of moose, rarely confront humans but have been known to become aggressive after consuming fermented wild apples.

"My family and I have been dragged through a nightmare," Mr Westlund said to Expressen magazine.
