New Zealand will play host to two international VIPs this weekend.

On Friday the United States' Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, will land.

She’ll be in town on official and informal business until her departure on Sunday morning.

Shortly after Clinton’s departure on Sunday, Prince William will arrive in Auckland.

Clinton will meet Foreign Minister Murray McCully to sign an agreement that will see stronger ties between New Zealand and the US.

Under the agreement, diplomats being posted to New Zealand's embassy in Washington would be able to spend 12 months working at the State Department, and American diplomats coming to Wellington would be seconded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

She’ll also meet Prime Minister John Key, Labour Party leader Phil Goff, and lay a wreath at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Meanwhile, Prince William will kick off his visit with a trip to Eden Park to take in the Rugby World Cup redevelopments.

He’ll also have a sail on the Auckland Harbour, meet Mr Key in Wellington, and visit Wellington Children's Hospital.

Prince William will depart for Australia on Tuesday but before he does, he’ll sample some local culinary delights with a hangi and a barbeque.

Inspector Derek Davison from Auckland City District Police said they would try to minimise disruptions to traffic but urged motorists to have patience on the roads.

"While we try to minimise any impact on the travelling public that motorcades have, we're not able to guarantee there won't be some disruption to them from time to time,” he said.

“To that end we encourage motorists and residents to have patience if they find themselves on the periphery of a motorcade or official engagement."
