An elephant calf born alive three days after keepers declared it had died in its mother's womb is receiving round-the-clock intensive care in Sydney.
Despite stunning Taronga Zoo staff with its arrival early this morning, the unnamed male is far from out of the woods as it is kept in a heated barn with mother Porntip.
The Asian elephant's protracted labour began on March 1.
"The first 24 hours for this calf are critical if it is to survive," zoo spokesman Mark Williams said.
