An elderly couple have been found buried alive in mountains of garbage inside their Chicago home.

The man and woman, both in their 70s, were rescued and rushed to hospital in critical conditions after authorities were alerted they had not been heard from in three weeks.

Police said the hoarders' house was "packed from floor to ceiling" with rubbish throughout two storeys, a basement and garage.

The property, in the city's south side, will likely be condemned.
