A 7.4 magnitude earthquake has caused widespread damage in Christchurch and surrounding areas.

The earthquake, which struck at 4.35 am this morning, was centred 30km west of Christchurch and 33km underground.

Two men have been seriously injured from falling glass, several buildings in the central city have collapsed and power and water have been cut in some areas.
