Thousands of Christchurch residents have gathered at North Hagley Park for today's major Civic Memorial Service.
The 185 people who died in the February 22 earthquake a year ago will be remembered.
Tens of thousands of Cantabrians are expected to turn out for the service.
The crowd stood, many people with heads bowed, as the names of the 185 deceased were read out.
A mix of firefighters and police read the names.
Two minutes' silence was held at 12.51pm - the time the magnitude-6.3 quake struck last year.
