Their physical scars are there for all to see but it is the emotional pain that a group of teenage girls are at Angel Faces to try to heal.

The Los Angeles retreat is a unique service which aims to empower young female burn victims from all over the world, the Associated Press reports.

The program uses group counselling, role playing and art therapy to help victims learn how to cope with teasing, staring and probing questions.

A professional cosmetologist also helps boost body image by teaching the girls how to use specialty make-up.
