Prime Minister John Key returned from Samoa overnight and has attended a function to mark the breaking of ground for tunnels on the $1.4 billion Waterview Connection in Auckland.
The work to be undertaken on the connection is New Zealand's biggest ever roading project.
Key was joined by chairman of the construction alliance Graham Darlow, Minister for economic development Steven Joyce, Auckland mayor Len Brown and chair of NZTA Chris Moller.
