Shortly after 7pm on Monday (12pm NZDT Tuesday), the National Hurricane Center said wind speeds inside Sandy had dropped slightly as the storm became a post-tropical cyclone but remained hurricane-force at around 140km/h.
It made landfall in New Jersey near Atlantic City around 8pm (1pm NZDT).
One US sailor on board a replica of the HMS Bounty was recovered from the sea on Monday in an "unresponsive" condition and the captain was feared dead after the tall ship went down off the Carolinas.
