Abusive parents should be offered a $5000 incentive to get sterilised, according to ACT MP David Garrett.
Garrett expresses his personal opinion, not representative of the ACT party, on a blog, according to media reports.
The blog discussed violence and death in families and the measures taken to prevent it from happening.
"If - say - $5000 was paid to the likes of both parents of the Kahui twins if they chose to be sterilised, this would address many ... concerns," Mr Garrett commented.
Three-month-old south Auckland twins Chris and Cru Kahui were killed four years ago and their father, Chris, was acquitted of their murders in 2008.
Anti-violence group Jigsaw spokesman Tau Huirama likened Garrett's rants to Hitler.
"I just cringe at the thought of sterilisation, it's a thing that takes you back to Hitler and that sort of thinking," he told Radio New Zealand.
Labour deputy leader Annette King opposed the idea and suggested the money would be better off used towards preventative measures such as parenting programmes.
