Has raunch culture set women back 50 years?

An Australian feminist visiting New Zealand has said she believes "raunch culture" has set women in Western societies back by more than 50 years.

Melinda Tankard Reist believes we're raising children in a pornographic landscape, NZPA reported.

"I think we have gone backwards," she told media.

"Raunch culture has taken us back. It's an absolute tragedy. These were issues being raised by feminists in the 1950s and 60s."

Ms Reist is group founder of Collective Shout, an organisation which names and shames companies that use sexual images of girls.

She also said girls today "think that empowerment lies in their ability to be hot and sexy".

The staunch feminist is a controversial figure in Australian because she opposes abortion and has written two books about it.

Ms Reist will speak this week at a conference in Auckland run by Christian-based lobby group Family First.

Do you think raunch culture has set women back by 50 years? Have your say.

Who cares seriously? She is a feminist and she is from Aussie. This isnt an issue.
I think that women today are living in seriously harsh conditions of insecurity, failing to be beautiful, attention seeking, tabloid following, and yes pornographic naturists. It is a sad society that allows or promotes women to be the eye candy many presume women are only good for. I agree that foolishly women nowadays believe that being a strong women mens exxuding eroticism and freedom of sexuality. However wrong I may view this, it is their decision. I am christian and still feel pressure to dress scantily I mean the Kardashians are just so gorgeous! But I remembe my values and do not wish my daughters to experience this sort of judgment from males.
THIS IS FOR ALL OF THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW WHAT RAUNCH IS! raunch (rônch, ränch) n. Slang 1. Lewdness vulgarity obscenity. 2. Material or a performance that is sexually explicit or evocative "Audiences are still astonished when she goes for the raunch" Katrine Ames
I am 22yrs young, and I can't believe how the younger generation is growing and dressing up way too fast! Parents should be responsible for their kids, dressing and allowing them to dress appropriately. Raunchy clothes on young girls shows exactly what sort of morals their parents have. None. Young children, and especially teenagers need boundaries, it gives them a sense of security. Allowing your child to dress in a way that will one day draw unwanted attention is not responsible. This generation is growing up in a world where the perverted has now become normal, and its wrong. Parents dress your children in childrens' clothes, not in womans' clothes. You wouldn't be happy if one day some pervert took advantage of your 'little girl'. So do all that you can to keep kids as kids, while they are still kids. The world needs more responsible parents!
If a lady likes to look appealing to the opposite sex (or raunchy as this article put it) ITS HER CHOICE, If some cultures women walk around topless all the time and they are not discriminated against - this lady calls herself a feminist but seems to insist on turning what makes a lot of woman feel good about themselves into a bad thing "These were issues being raised by feminists in the 1950s and 60s " LOL you're not in the 50's and 60s and as time shifts so do fashions etc... Pathetic.
Sadly astonished how non direct we are approaching this. First would you like to be told christian or not like to be asked if smacking or non smacking, where you should put your children or how you should bring up your children? If the answer is no then puck up and settle your own family. In my family its ought to much to be mature however there's a place or orientation for these fashion sense. Honestly yes unhealthy familys, christians (not all) or sick criminals are the reason for the negativity done with the fact inappropriate fashion (yes against ghetto skirt *** for sure but not a normal skirt). There's no need for fashion police and if we insist old fashion values it will be the lonesome village of hobbits (rest of the world proclaim). To lastly note. The only injustice are those that are seen sick or are hypocrites in there own way non confident way so this view is from only a feminist but youtube feminist versus (no chance a adult feminist gets relationship). C'est la vie!
Just bust a nut, Just bust it!! Just F'n BUST IT!
I agree with abstain - I am a single mum with two young daughters and I make every effort to give them all the attention they need. Parents - don't be afraid to hug your teenagers, and compliments are the best confidence boosters ever! I love my kids and they know this - and I know I won't have to worry about the influences of the "raunch culture" out there.
Is it not perhaps a little retrograde to look at the changing nature of feminism and to decry some young women who act like some men have always done? It's not all young women who act this way, nor is it all men who are attracted. The point is that young women feel confident enough in themselves to make the same demands on men as men make on young women. It reflects a quid pro quo and not necessarily a step back fifty years. Fifty years ago Sean Connery, acting as James Bond could slap a girl around. Would one of these forward young women accept that treatment?
What age group is this question been asked? My 78yr old mother begins a lot of sentences with "you girls are so lucky these days,in my day.....".In my mothers day women were treated as inferior beings where you cooked, cleaned & raised children.I thank the feminists for the progress from there.Raunchy?Well, back then to now the oldest profession was & still is around...except now they have a Prostitutes Collective looking after them.I thank female groups for that.Women use to be abused in their own homes & there wasn't a thing they could do about it,unlike now there are services for these issues.I thank feminists for that too.As for the subject of raunchy....that begins at home I suppose? Our Mum didn't teach us that dressing raunchy got you places....your brain did.I want to scream at those American child pagent mums who dress their daughters like mini-adults in some pretty inappropriate costumes with attitudes to boot!Feminists groups boycott those...theres a backwards culture.Scary...
