Miss Universe New Zealand's choice to wear a dress made in the United States has left Kiwi officials "very upset".
Ria van Dyke donned traditional black and white for her national costume at the Miss Universe 2010 pageant but the only things made by a fellow New Zealander were her headpiece and cuffs.
National director for Miss Universe New Zealand Val Lott told media she was outraged that the dress was not made by a Kiwi.
"I was very upset about the fact that it was not a national costume. It was just a black dress with bling bling on it."
"Thank God we had a headpiece by Natalie Chan."
Auckland designer Natalie Chan featured the Silver Fern in her designs for the accessories.
The winner of Miss Universe will be announced on August 23 (NZ time).
