Miss Universe New Zealand's choice to wear a dress made in the United States has left Kiwi officials "very upset".

Ria van Dyke donned traditional black and white for her national costume at the Miss Universe 2010 pageant but the only things made by a fellow New Zealander were her headpiece and cuffs.

National director for Miss Universe New Zealand Val Lott told media she was outraged that the dress was not made by a Kiwi.

"I was very upset about the fact that it was not a national costume. It was just a black dress with bling bling on it."

"Thank God we had a headpiece by Natalie Chan."

Auckland designer Natalie Chan featured the Silver Fern in her designs for the accessories.

The winner of Miss Universe will be announced on August 23 (NZ time).

What do you think of Miss New Zealand's choice to wear a dress by a US designer? Have your say

thats pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if she paid her own way like i heard...then i salute miss new zealand for wearing that gorgeous dress and who cares who designed it...i mean if new zealand wanted her to wear a nz original designer dress then why didnt they find sponsors for her dress....the way i see it the miss nz organization shouldn't be complaining about it....they should have done something about it instead. stupid people......
She should have had a NZ gown representing her own country and not NZ designers, but perhaps nobody stepped forwards. From what I have heard Miss Universe has to pay most of her own way. How supportive is NZ?
She still looked great in that dress.... Of cause we would've loved to have seen her in a nz designed dress.....Did they actually a hot nz designed dress for her to wear is my question.....
Typical American, they use any country for their benefit, and that silver fern thinge on her head its like a stamp on an envelope for people to know where the Miss Universe is from. Noooooo! no, no! this is not right Americans, We do have thousands of briliant designers in NZ.
Nice dress Miss NZ but i agree with the people who says she should have worn an NZ designer dress..something that would tell people about NZ since she was representing NZ during the national dress portion ....when i look at her dress it says "hi Come to New zealand ...theres nothing in there but trees and snow so i got an american dress." she should have worn something that says about the history and the people of New Zealand. (i know i know NZ is still very young and fresh and theres hardly a history about it, but still theres that tiny winy bit of history to tell the whole wide world that theres more about NZ than clean and green grass and a white snow in south island! ) Still i am proud of u Miss NZ for going out there and represented New Zealand. i wish u had more support from NZ designers.... i blame NZ designers for not backing up Miss NZ with her national dress!
well,no offense, but some of the other comments i've read B4,is kinda true...............what she's wearing is nice BUT she's running for miss aoteroa,so she should wear something made from new zealand or anything that tell a story about new zealand..
really whingers, get real and get over yourselves you bunch of hypocrites! yes her dress was made in america, and? i am sure no-one that made it was in the slave trade! what are you all wearing? cheap shoes made in vietnam? clothes from the warehouse made in china? do you realise these clothes are cheap cos the workers, mostly children, are working for a pitance and in so they can afford to live in there over populated sub-standard housing? i am sure plenty of 'kiwi' designers were aware of the competition and would be able to put a proposal forward that may give them potential worldwide 'exposure' if they wanted to or if they considered beauty pagents a viable market. i personally think that most of these comments come from insecure women who are less than comfortable in the 'bodies' they live in and have to find something to *** about this gorgeous woman and all they could find was her dress! boo hoo
New Zealand designer all the way...... not over seas.....
hey it don't matter what Miss NZ wears, it will be another Latin American that wins !! Have you seen Miss Bolivia ?? totally off this planet !!! she could wear recycled rubbish to the competition and nobody will notice !!
