Should the death penalty be used in China?

Two people were executed in China yesterday for their roles in the San Lu tainted baby formula scandal.

Zhang Yujun was executed for endangering public safety and Geng Jinping for producing and selling toxic food, according to the New Zealand Herald. Read more: Amnesty urges Fonterra to condemn executions

At least six children died and more than 300,000 became sick last year as a result of ingesting the baby formula containing melamine.

The scandal was big news in New Zealand because Fonterra had a 43 per cent in San Lu.

Melamine, which can cause kidney stones, is used to make plastics, fertilisers and even concrete.

It's been alleged that San Lu officials were aware of the melamine problem by early August 2008 but didn't tell the public for six weeks as China wanted to save face for the Beijing Olympics.

A total of 21 San Lu executives and middlemen were tried and sentenced in January by a court in the northern city of Shijiazhuang for their involvement in the case.

San Lu's former general manager, Tian Wenhua, received a life jail sentence while three other former executives got between five years and 15 years in prison.

A Fonterra spokesman said "the whole incident has been a terrible tragedy".

Do you think the death penalty should have been used in this case? Or should Fonterra and the New Zealand Government publicly condemn the executions?

they deserve death penalty, what they have done is beyond evil, and dam right cruel, poor innocent children have died because of these people, and no one dont deserve that! DEATH PENALTY
Yes they got what they deserved, and should not be allowed to buy our dairy farms. 2 reasons. 1 Do we trust them. 2. This is NZ land, our country. The govt'ments have been to quick to sell off our assets. Time for "Kiwis" to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. WHY WASN'T THE COUNTRY HANDED OVER IN THE 2ND WORLD WAR, SAVE THE TIME AND SHAME
If it in their Laws go for it. Bleeding heart do gooders keep out of other country laws U have made major World wide problems with Ur actions
no but we should stop trading with theses bad ***. it wastes our countries money, looses good locals jobs.
Yes, an eye for an eye.
Yes, the death penalty was warranted..'eye for an eye'. It should be brought back, when the human being commit henious crimes i.e. child kidnapping and murder, murder in any shape or form, categorise the criminal...I'd step forward and release the trap door and not even blink an eye!
The people that should have got exicuted were the people who gave the ingerdiants for the baby milk mix, at the end of the day they were not the highly paid scientist, who hid the truth for months and when the issue came to the fore they still had a cheek to moan and continue say that the product was ok. These chineese people who were exicuted were the scape goats for the real bad eggs that are still running free.
Who are we to comment on whether China should have a death penalty or not? Dont go down the road of the Yanks and poke our noses in other countries business. Not as if our comments are going to persuade them either way.
I'm against the death penalty for all but the most violent and unrepentant of criminals. It doesn't work. They have the death penalty in China and IT DOESN'T WORK. Ever heard of the triads? They've been around for years and show no indication of dying down, death penalty or no. As for the milk criminals, I would have put them to use for the community. Jail time and enforced labour. Get them to use their skills (accounting?) in a way that profits the public. They do deserve to be punished but punish criminals in a way that is still humane and benefits us.
I would like to know China's crime statistics, I'm guessing it's pretty low, i think if NZ adopted half of China's laws our crime rate here would drop dramatically, Bring back the Death penalty for serious Crime.
