Canterbury residents facing storage bills and those struggling to pay winter power costs following the earthquakes will be able to apply for grants from the Red Cross.
The Red Cross has set up the two new grants for this year.
People with houses in the Red Zone or properties that sustained more than $100,000 will be able to apply for a $500 grant to help with ongoing storage costs.
A $100 a month grant for June, July, August, September to help with winter power bills was available for the elderly, people with children under 18 and the medically vulnerable.
Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Commission chair Sir John Hansen says people are still experiencing financial and personal hardship nearly a year after the February quake.
"Some homeowners have been paying for storage since the September 2010 earthquake. It is hoped these grants will help ease the financial burden, and help people continue to rebuild their lives."
The Red Cross constantly looked at areas for new grants and volunteers had noted people were worried about on-going storage and winter power costs.
The winter power grant was also offered last year.
The Red Cross earthquake appeals had raised nearly $115 million. More than $67 million in grants had been distributed to 76,463 people.
