Parliament is going to debate a bill to "Mondayise" public holidays when they fall on a weekend.

Labour MP David Clark drafted the member's bill and it's been drawn from the ballot.

He says Waitangi Day and Anzac Day fall on weekends every five years.

"It doesn't seem fair that where workers are entitled to a day off they are sometimes missing out," he said on Tuesday.

Whether the bill gets past its first reading, likely to come up within the next few weeks, depends on whether the government supports it.

Prime Minister John Key says National's caucus will think about that.

Do you think public holidays should be 'Mondayised'? Have your say below.

if you get the day off or not is beside the point, majority of the people do have a proper job where they do work monday-friday and sometimes weekends. the only people that might not work on mondays might only be people in supermarkets and some retails jobs where they have all different hours and their days hours of work change all the time. bottom line, if you dont like it, get over it! It is just what this country needs, that way everyone can choose to take the day off and have a long weekend to spend time with their familys or you can choose to work that public holiday and get paid your time and a half and or double time in some companies.
I don't think they should carry Waitangi Day and Anzac Day over to a Monday when they fall on the week-end. People in retail don't get public holidays off and everyone else who does just go shopping anyway and then complain when they have to wait at checkouts. What would people do if everything was closed every public holiday?
Waitangi and Anzac Days are surposed to be celebration of the occasion, no matter what day it falls on. It should not be celebrated on any other day As it is everyone is intitled to 4weeks holiday plus stat days We are seeing the face of greed
My opinion is that all Public Holidays be recognised on the day they fall, and Monday being the day employees get the day off. So, if you do not work the Monday, and the Holiday is the Saturday that you worked, you get paid as if the Holiday was Saturday. Those that work Monday's benefit anyway as they get their day off. There are still some businesses that only work Monday to Friday, so Public Holidays taken on the Monday or Friday is better, giving employees a long weekend. Long weekends, I believe, are benfical to staff, they can 'get-away' for a nice break. The last job I had, that break was needed due to the level of stress my position incured. Even then, I sometimes went into work to do little tasks I felt needed. I choose to do this, and choose not to be paid for it. Though the outcome was always payment of satisfaction.
Well its about time someone drew up this bill and hell yeah it needs to be supported! I've never understood why some holidays have been observed on Monday and some haven't. For a country that so loves blanket policies, this one is severely overdue and needs to be adopted. Good move Mr Clark.
I totally agree with "Mondayising" Public Holidays. Last year seemed so long due to the lack of them. It is good for morale etc. And it means that those who took those days off will not need to.
YES! And while you're at it address the huge absence of public holidays over the winter, seriously depressing...
I think this is just so, so silly! Everyone misses out at some point! I have worked Tuesday to Saturday for my entire working career! Monday to Friday is not the norm anymore. I think everyone is entitled to take a day as would suit them if the public holiday falls on their regular day off. Couldn't be more fair than that!! Labour is as silly in trying to push this bill as the word "modayise" is.
I would like to know what happens if monday is your rostered day off?? As it is people who work tuesday to saturday miss out on most of the public holidays
although it still ain't affect Retails as much. we don't get any day off, during some public holidays.
