Police are investigating the death of a hunter in his late 20s in Wairarapa.
A 59-year-old man, the man's hunting companion, called police about 2pm on Saturday to report the death in the Aorangi Forest Park, near Pirinoa, southwest of Martinborough, says Detective Senior Sergeant Sean Hansen, officer in charge of Wairarapa CIB.
Police were at the scene, which was some distance from the nearest road.
The investigation was in its early stages, he said.
"At this time, we cannot comment on the circumstances surrounding this man's death until we have interviewed witnesses from various hunting parties who were in the Aorangi Park area today."
The scene would be guarded overnight and the man's body was likely to be removed on Sunday, Det Sen Sgt Hansen said.
