Prisoner escapes after kicking cell door

AAP

A man has escaped from a holding cell after kicking a cell door in shortly after a Christchurch court appearance on assault and home detention breach charges.

Jayson Nopera Rule, 31, had been remanded in custody when he appeared at Nga Hau e Wha Marae, the central Christchurch marae being used for some Christchurch District Court hearings in the wake of last year's earthquake.

He kicked in the door at the holding cell he was in at the marae and escaped on foot, police say.

Rule is Maori, 180cm tall and of medium, muscular build. Anyone who sees him is asked to call police.
