A Nelson teenager accidentally hanged himself while he was experimenting with knot-tying, a coroner has found.

Ethan Herron, 15, was playing in a bushy area behind his great-grandfather's Nelson house in April last year, when he made a mistake while he was trying to tie knots.

Ethan was found after he had failed to respond to his mother calling out to him telling him to come inside.

He was found kneeling with a thin yellow cord tied tightly around his neck.

Coroner Carla na Nagara found Ethan's death was the result of an accident.

"I consider it more likely than not that Ethan has made a fatal error while practising tying knots," she said.

Ethan seemed to be a happy, well adjusted boy who enjoyed his family and friends, and there was no evidence to suggest his actions were deliberate, Ms na Nagara said.
