A convicted sex offender who used false documents to get jobs at schools has been jailed for just over four years.
Te Rito Henry Miki, 40, was sentenced to four years, one month and two weeks in prison at the Auckland District Court on Friday after he last month admitted to using a false CV and birth certificate to get work in six schools.
Along with the seven fraud charges, he also pleaded guilty to four charges of breaching conditions of an extended supervision order.
During sentencing, Judge Claire Ryan said Miki's offending created "grief and distress and loss" in the schools he taught at.
"You should not have been teaching at schools, you knew that," Judge Ryan said.
Miki used sophisticated methods of deception to get jobs he wasn't qualified for, she said.
"This was not the only job you could have gone into," she said.
"One has to wonder why you did it."
After his conviction for two charges of assault and three of indecent assault on a 14-year-old boy, a decade of court supervision orders issued in 2010 meant Miki could not associate or contact any person under the age of 16.
A special condition also meant he could not work or undertake training without the prior approval of his probation officer.
However, in February this year, Miki was discovered working at an Auckland school.
The names of four schools where Miki taught, in Tauranga, Murupara, Rotorua and Stratford, have been revealed, but on Thursday two Auckland schools had their names permanently suppressed in the Auckland District Court.
Education Minister Hekia Parata launched a ministerial inquiry in February to find out how Miki was able to work as a teacher.
The inquiry is expected to report back in mid-June.
