There were angry scenes in Wanganui District Court on Friday when a man facing multiple rape charges was found unfit to stand trial.
Judge David Cameron granted a stay of proceedings on 22 charges against William Paul Cornelius, who was ruled to be unfit to stand trial as he has early stages of dementia.
Automatic name suppression for one victim, Heather Walsh, who alleged Cornelius held her as a sex slave in a remote bush hut, was lifted at her request, Fairfax reported.
The accused, 79, was first charged in December 2009. The charges involved four women between 1996 and 1990.
