An Auckland policeman will have a good work story to tell when he gets home - after rushing a pregnant woman whose contractions were just three minutes apart to hospital.
Sergeant Polyvius Stylianou was at the scene of a collision on the southern motorway on Tuesday morning when a friend of the pregnant woman pulled up next to him asking for urgent help.
Other staff were tasked with dealing with the collision as Sgt Stylianou rushed the woman and her friend to Middlemore Hospital - lights, sirens and all - as the gap between contractions was shortening.
The woman was immediately taken to the hospital's birthing unit on arrival.
Police don't yet know whether the woman has given birth.
