Police say it's likely to be several days before they can confirm how a woman was shot in the head in an isolated house in Hawke's Bay.
The 27-year-old woman was airlifted to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital in Hastings, where she is in a critical condition.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange says police were called to a rural dwelling in the Kereru area, about 40 kilometres south-west of Hastings, just after 6pm on Saturday.
The woman lived in the house and she was found by her partner who, along with friends, gave first-aid treatment before she was flown by Hawke's Bay Rescue Helicopter to hospital.
Sen Sgt de Lange says there will be a full scene examination and police will speak to people who know the woman.
He says that is expected to take several days, but should provide confirmation of the circumstances leading to the woman getting the head wound.
