Reekie to stay in Waikato prison: judge

Convicted multiple rapist and serial litigant Nicholas Reekie has lost a court bid to be transferred back to Auckland Prison.

Reekie, who is serving preventive detention for the rape of four women and girls, was transferred to Waikato's Spring Hill prison in February.

Reekie took the Department of Corrections to the High Court, arguing he should be sent back to Auckland Prison, where he had been kept during a two-week civil hearing.

Previously he had been in prison in Northland.

Auckland was easier for his girlfriend to visit him and help him with his legal paperwork. He is accusing the Corrections Department of targeting him.

Reekie is due in Huntly District Court on Friday to defend charges over his behaviour in prison. He is accused of covering up a camera in his cell, leaving his arm in a meal hatch when guards try to close it and referring to guards as "gay".

In her judgment, released on Thursday, Justice Rebecca Ellis ruled against Reekie, saying the prison should be able to deal with minor disciplinary matters without having Reekie take them to the High Court each time.

He is already suing the department for being mistreated and abused in prison.

Justice Ellis's decision revealed that Reekie has made so many complaints a dedicated prison officer has been assigned to try to resolve them.

He has made so many information requests the prison now refers them all to head office in Wellington.
