New Zealand's emissions trading scheme is inferior to Australia's new carbon tax, a lobby group says.
The carbon tax came into effect on Sunday and a poll published on Monday shows 62 per cent of Australians oppose it.
The tax has to be paid by 300 companies that produce the most greenhouse gas and the opposition has pledged to repeal it.
Lobby group Sustainable Aotearoa says the scheme is more user-friendly and cost-effective than the emissions trading scheme.
Spokesman Wayne Cartwright says New Zealand will suffer as a result of having an inferior system, Radio New Zealand reported.
