Two armed robbers fled with what police a describing as a large sum of cash after a hold-up at a Burger King outlet in Hamilton on Wednesday night.

A worker at the restaurant in Chartwell's Lynden Court was jumped by two men while taking out rubbish at around 11pm.

He was ushered back inside where his supervisor and two other workers were forced at gunpoint to hand over money before the robbers left on foot, Detective Sergeant Daryl Smith says.

A police dog tracked tracked them for a short distance before losing the scent.

Det Sgt Smith says the restaurant and part of the shopping centre is cordoned off on Thursday and police will carry out a scene examination and check security camera footage.
