Two men have been committed for trial on charges of murdering a Sri Lankan farm worker in Canterbury in February.

The body of Sameera Chandrasena, 28, was found in a house destroyed by fire near Oxford.

A post-mortem examination revealed he died of injuries from an assault before the fire.

In Christchurch District Court on Friday, Thuvan Prawash Sawal, 23, and Viraj Alahakoon, 33, both Sri Lankans living in Christchurch, were committed for trial, charged with murdering Mr Chandrasena, the Christchurch Court News website reports.

The men will be kept in custody until their next appearance on August 24.
