A motorcyclist believed to be in his early 70s is dead after apparently losing control of his bike on the Waikato Expressway.

The crash at Rangiriri happened about 7.50am on Friday.

Police initially said the accident involved a car, but later in the morning Inspector Leo Tooman said it was believed the man encountered difficulties and fell off his BMW machine.

Investigators do not believe any other vehicle was involved.

They are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, who hasn't already been interviewed, to contact Huntly police.

It will be some time before the cause of the crash is known.
