An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale has struck the East Cape on Saturday.

The quake at 5.46am was centred 40 kilometres northwest of Te Araroa at a depth of 33km, GNS Science said.

Several people in the area reported feeling the quake but there were no reports of damage.
