Police have confirmed the body recovered from the sea off New Plymouth is that of 17-year-old Brazilian exchange student Felipe Melo.

Felipe was one of three people swept from Paritutu Rock during a school climbing expedition nearly two weeks ago.

The bodies of fellow student Stephen Kahukaka-Geyde, also 17, and instructor Bryce Jourdain, 42, are still missing.

A body was recovered from the water near Paritutu Rock on Sunday, and on Monday Inspector Frank Grant said the coroner was satisfied it was Felipe.

He arrived in New Zealand in January and was attending Spotswood College. His parents travelled from Brazil following the tragedy and will now be able to take their son's body home with them.

Police are continuing their search for the missing climbers and would continue on Tuesday, Insp Grant said.

"We are determined to return the bodies of Bryce and Stephen home to their families."
