A member of the East Coast rugby team is in Christchurch Hospital after he was assaulted outside a nightclub in Timaru early on Sunday.
Police say the East Coast rugby team was in Timaru to play South Canterbury on Saturday.
The 23-year-old sustained a serious injury to his mouth in the assault and was transferred from Timaru to Christchurch Hospital.
The full extent of his injuries was unknown, police said.
CCTV footage showing the assault has been obtained by police.
At the time of the assault, a number of people were out on the street after just leaving the nearby nightclub.
