Police are seeking answers as to how a man suffered a gunshot wound before he was deposited at Taupo hospital.
Police say the 22-year-old was left at the hospital around 1.30pm on Wednesday after being shot in the leg.
"This man has told us he was shot with a shotgun but is not providing any information beyond that," Detective Sergeant Tony Manunui said.
His injury is not life threatening.
Det Sgt Manunui says they believe the incident took place in the Mangakino area and will talk to the man's associates to try and piece together what happened.
They were also wanting to hear from anyone who had information about the incident.
