Man charged over Kapiti death

Police have named the young man killed after a fight in a Kapiti car park as Sean Strongman-Linter.

They have also arrested and charged a 22-year-old man with the murder of Mr Strongman-Lintern, 20, early on Saturday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Oxnam says the accused will appear in Porirua District Court on Monday.

Mr Strongman-Lintern was found dead by a police patrol outside Monteith's Junction Bar at the Kapiti Lights complex just minutes after the fight around 12.40am on Saturday.

Both men were believed to have been drinking in the bar earlier.

Det Snr Sgt Oxnam says police are looking for a knife or similar weapon that may have been discarded in the Kapiti Lights area or along State Highway One south of Paraparaumu to Pukerua Bay.

Earlier, police said they believed the death was completely unrelated to a homicide nearby a little over a month ago.

Izak Millanta, 17, was found unconscious in the nearby Coastlands shopping mall car park and died of his injuries later in hospital. A 22-year-old Porirua man has been charged with his manslaughter.

Police have since increased their presence in the area, which locals say is a well-known trouble spot, with youths drinking at the two bars and hanging out in car parks.

Two sergeants and five constables were on duty in the area on Friday night and the police station was operating 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Police are working closely with the Kapiti District Council, a large number of non-governmental organisations and iwi to try to address the issue of youths consuming drugs and alcohol.
