The parents of a newlywed American couple involved in a fatal crash near Waitomo Caves have arrived in New Zealand.

Kallan Stithem, 31, was killed when the couple's car collided with a truck at the Waitomo Caves turn-off on State Highway 3, between Otorohanga and Te Kuiti, on Thursday.

Mr Stithem's wife of four days, Kirsten Steinke, 28, remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit.

The couple were in New Zealand on their honeymoon.

Gary and Jean Stithem and Jim and Gerri Steinke, all from Denver, Colorado, arrived in New Zealand on Friday morning, the Waikato District Health Board said.

In a statement, the parents thanked all those who responded to the crash.

"We also want to express our heartfelt appreciation for the generous offers of assistance from New Zealanders who understand our sorrow and tragedy. The enormous generosity of so many people of this nation has touched our hearts," the parents said.

Police say the car failed to give way as it was leaving Waitomo Caves Road, turning right into the path of a northbound truck.
