A snowfall warning has been issued for the Canterbury high country, with a deep low forecast to hit the South Island.
MetService says the low will bring cold southeasterly rain to Canterbury and some of that is expected to fall as snow in areas above 400m on Monday morning.
Up to 10cm of snow is expected in areas above 700m.
Further snow is expected in higher areas through to Monday night.
The snow has the potential to affect roads including Porters Pass, Lindis Pass and Arthurs Pass and cause problems for livestock.
Meanwhile, a heavy rain warning is in place for Westland, Buller and Bay of Plenty.
