One person is dead following a single-car crash near Reporoa, south of Rotorua, on Friday night.
It's the first fatal crash of the Labour Weekend holiday period, which began at 4pm on Friday.
A police northern communications spokesman told NZ Newswire it's not yet been confirmed how many people were in the car when it rolled on Plateau Rd.
Emergency services were called to the scene just before 8.30pm.
A person who was trapped in the car has been freed and has a broken arm, the spokesman said.
Last year eight people died on the roads over Labour Weekend, while the lowest ever toll was three. There were no fatalities during this year's Easter long weekend.
The holiday period ends at 6am on Tuesday.
