An Auckland hunter missing in Te Urewera National Park for three days is to be reunited with his family after being found safe and well.
Siow Hong Kuik, known as Desmond, hadn't been seen since Sunday afternoon, when he left his hunting party at their camp near Waititi Stream to go on a lone hunt.
He was found about 1.30pm on Wednesday by searchers who had discovered a note from the experienced hunter at Kouanui Hut a day earlier saying he was lost but had found food.
Arrangements are being made to fly him out, after which he will be reunited with his wife and three children and be medically assessed.
About 40 people took part in the search and rescue operation, including police on foot, in kayaks and horseback.
