A Kaitaia man is facing charges after reports of a gunman forcing two men into a van in Northland.

Police were called about 6.45am on Thursday by witnesses saying a man with a rifle had assaulted two men before forcing them into a van on State Highway One near Takahue, about 14km south of Kaitaia.

The men were driven south before the gunman got out of the van and walked towards a following vehicle.

Police cordoned off a nearby address and established phone contact with the offender.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called out but was not brought into action after local police were able to make an arrest.

A 47-year-old man has been charged with firearms offences following the incident.

The men who were assaulted earlier were later found driving south of Whangarei towards Auckland.
